  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread Cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk Almond milk can be used as an alternative
  • 1 cup heavy cream Substitute with half-and-half if needed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Can be substituted with alternative sweeteners
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Streusel Topping

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon For the streusel

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Cut the challah or brioche bread into 1-inch cubes and place them in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, gently pressing down to ensure all pieces are soaked.
  • In another bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and ground cinnamon until crumbly to make the streusel topping.
  • Distribute the streusel over the bread mixture evenly.
  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole for about 1 hour, until it is golden brown and set in the center.
  • Allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruits, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze well-wrapped.
