  • 1 cup water The base of the syrup, ensuring a smooth consistency.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Classic white sugar works best, but can be substituted with cane sugar, honey, or agave syrup.
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves Lightly packed. Use fresh, bright green leaves for the best flavor.

Preparation

  • Rinse the fresh basil leaves thoroughly under cool water to remove any dirt or residue.
  • Lightly pat the basil leaves dry with a paper towel.

Heating Ingredients

  • In a small pot, heat one cup of water and one cup of sugar over medium heat, stirring until fully dissolved. This should take about 2-3 minutes.

Infusing Flavors

  • Once the sugar has dissolved, add the basil leaves to the pan and gently press them with a spoon to release their natural oils.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes.

Steeping and Straining

  • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the syrup steep for an additional 10–15 minutes for a more intense basil flavor.
  • Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, discarding the basil leaves.

Cooling and Storing

  • Allow the syrup to cool completely before pouring it into a sterilized glass jar or bottle.
  • Keep it refrigerated and use within two weeks for optimal freshness.

Notes

For a stronger basil flavor, let the leaves steep longer. Store in a sterile jar; it lasts up to two weeks but can be extended with lemon juice or vodka.
