For the Cake

  • 1 9x13-inch chocolate cake or brownie, baked according to package or recipe directions

For the Filling

  • 30 ounces cherry pie filling, store-bought or homemade about 2 cups
  • 4 ounces kirsch or alternative, such as cherry brandy or amaretto use cherry juice for non-alcoholic option
  • 2 boxes chocolate pudding, prepared according to package directions or homemade 90 grams each

For the Whipped Cream

  • 1.5 cups cold heavy whipping cream
  • 2-4 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For Garnishing

  • fresh cherries
  • shaved chocolate
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • icing sugar or cocoa powder for dusting

Preparation

  • Bake the Cake: Prepare your chocolate cake according to the recipe or package instructions. Once baked, allow it to cool completely before cutting it into 1-inch cubes.
  • Prepare the Pudding: Make the chocolate pudding according to the package directions and let it cool.
  • Make the Whipped Cream: In a large mixing bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip until stiff peaks form.

Assembly

  • Begin layering half of the cake cubes at the bottom of your trifle bowl. Slightly press down, then drizzle half of the kirsch (if using) over the cake.
  • Follow with half of the pudding, then half of the cherry filling, and top with half of the whipped cream.
  • Repeat the layers in the same order: remaining cake, kirsch, pudding, cherries, and finish with whipped cream.
  • Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 1-4 hours, or overnight for the best flavor melding.

Garnishing

  • Just before serving, garnish with fresh cherries, chocolate sprinkles, or shaved chocolate as desired. Enjoy chilled!

Notes

For a homemade touch, consider making your own cherry filling. The trifle can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, but the cake may absorb moisture over time.
