  • 1 pinch salt

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until pale and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth.

  • Form the dough into a disc, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Roll the dough to ¼-inch thickness or pipe into decorative shapes. Add colored sugar or toppings if desired.
  • Arrange cookies on prepared sheets and bake for 10–12 minutes until the edges are just starting to turn golden.
  • Let cookies rest for 2 minutes on the pan, then transfer to a cooling rack.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight tin for up to 2 weeks to maintain freshness. Freeze unbaked dough or shaped cookies for up to 1 month. Bake directly from frozen when ready. Optionally, add a teaspoon of almond extract or lemon zest for a twist. Pair with tea, coffee, or warm milk for a cozy afternoon treat.
