Ingredients

For the blooming onion

  • 1 large onion Use a sweeter onion like a Vidalia for a milder flavor.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Try Italian seasoned or panko for extra crunch.
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • cooking spray For spraying the coated onion.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Cut off the top of the onion and peel off the outer layers.
  • Make vertical cuts into the onion to form petals, ensuring you don’t cut all the way through.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • In another bowl, whisk the eggs and milk until smooth.
  • Dip the prepared onion into the egg mixture, then coat it thoroughly in the flour mixture.
  • Place the coated onion into the air fryer basket and lightly spray it with cooking spray.
  • Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-12 minutes or until it’s beautifully golden and crispy.

Notes

Serve with a zesty dipping sauce like ranch or a spicy aioli. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. Reheat in the air fryer for the best texture.
