  • 8 slices 8 slices of bread
  • 4 slices 4 slices of ham (your favorite kind)
  • 4 slices 4 slices of Gruyère cheese (or any mild cheese that melts well) Feel free to swap out Gruyère for another cheese.
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup 1 cup of milk Almond milk can be used as a substitute.
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Additional Gruyère cheese for topping

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until it's smooth and slightly bubbly.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until the mixture thickens, then stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
  • Assemble your sandwiches by layering ham and cheese between two slices of bread.
  • Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and generously pour the béchamel sauce over the tops. Top with extra cheese for a nice finishing touch.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sandwiches are golden brown and delightfully bubbly.
  • Serve hot and enjoy your creation!

Notes

Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives, and consider pairing with a light salad or crispy fries.
