For the Cake

  • 1 box boxed cake mix Follow the instructions on the package for additional ingredients.
  • 3 each eggs As directed on the cake mix box.
  • 1/2 cup oil As directed on the cake mix box.
  • 1 cup water As directed on the cake mix box.
  • 1 bottle red food coloring
  • 1 bottle blue food coloring

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup butter Softened at room temperature.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Topping

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries Sliced for decoration.
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven as directed on the cake mix package.
  • Prepare the cake mix according to the package instructions, using the required eggs, oil, and water.
  • Divide the batter into three separate bowls. Add red food coloring to one bowl, blue food coloring to another, and leave the third bowl as is for the white layer.

Baking

  • Pour the colored batters into greased cake pans and bake as per the package instructions. Allow them to cool completely.

Frosting

  • For the frosting, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  • Cut the cooled cakes into flag shapes if desired or simply layer them directly.

Assembly

  • Assemble the colored cake layers in a flag formation and spread the buttercream frosting generously on top.
  • Finish by decorating with sliced strawberries and blueberries to create the perfect patriotic touch.

Notes

If you have leftovers, cover the cake well with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Unfrosted cake layers can be frozen tightly wrapped for up to a month. Allow to thaw in the fridge overnight before frosting.
