  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes Use fresh tomatoes as a substitute if desired.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil High-quality olive oil is recommended for best flavor.
  • ½ cup diced yellow onion About ½ medium onion.
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic 2–3 cloves of garlic minced.
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Pinch sugar Helps to balance acidity.

Cooking Instructions

  • Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat and add the olive oil.
  • Sauté the diced onions for 3–5 minutes until they soften and become translucent.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and dried basil, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir everything together.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low.
  • Let it simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally; if the sauce starts to spurt, lower the heat.
  • Season with kosher salt and a pinch of sugar, tasting and adjusting as necessary.

Notes

Store leftover sauce in an airtight container; it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for up to three months. Reheat by thawing overnight in the fridge.
