  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

Cooking Method

  • Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Add either the crushed tomatoes or fresh tomatoes, sugar, oregano, and basil.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring to a simmer and let cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Adjust seasonings as necessary.
  • Serve over pasta, alongside meatballs, or as a delightful pizza sauce.

Notes

For richer flavor, add a splash of red wine during the simmering stage. Feel free to add fresh vegetables or experiment with herbs based on your taste preferences. Proper storage is key; store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.
