Ingredients
  

For the Base

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • to taste dried thyme substitute with fresh if available
  • to taste salt keep sodium in check
  • to taste black pepper

For Serving

  • 4 pieces hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley (optional for garnish)

Instructions
 

Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  • Add the thinly sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes until golden and caramelized.

Add Garlic

  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1–2 minutes until fragrant.

Brown the Beef

  • Push the onions to the side or remove briefly, add the ground beef to the skillet, and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  • Drain any excess fat if needed.

Season and Simmer

  • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to meld flavors.

Toast Buns and Assemble

  • Toast hamburger buns lightly until golden brown.
  • Scoop the beef mixture onto each bun’s bottom half, top with 1/4 cup shredded Swiss cheese, and cover with the top bun.

Notes

For extra melt, place assembled open sandwiches briefly under a broiler or in a hot oven for 1–2 minutes. Use a wide skillet to give onions room to brown evenly. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
