  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened Can be substituted with a vegan option.
  • 1 cup milk Almond milk can be used for a dairy-free version.
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 drops Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)

Frosting Ingredients

  • 4 cups Frosting (buttercream or cream cheese)

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour six 8-inch round cake pans.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix this into the creamed mixture, alternating with milk.
  • Divide the batter into six bowls and add your chosen food coloring to each.

Baking

  • Pour each colored batter into the prepared pans, ensuring even distribution.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes. Check for doneness using a toothpick; it should come out clean.
  • After baking, let the layers cool completely.

Assembling

  • Layer them up by spreading frosting between each layer and coating the top and sides of the cake.
  • Decorate to your heart’s content!

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For freezing, wrap individual slices tightly and place in a freezer-safe bag for up to a month.
