Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joes

  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil For browning the beef
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20) Leaner versions can be used if preferred
  • 16 ounces tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup ketchup Can be substituted with BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Can replace with maple syrup for different sweetness
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard Can use yellow or brown mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 6 pieces hamburger buns Toasted for serving
  • 6 slices yellow cheese (American or cheddar) For topping

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add ground beef and season with salt and pepper. Break the meat into pieces with a wooden spoon.
  • Cook for 6–8 minutes until browned and no pink remains. Drain excess fat if desired.
  • Transfer the browned beef to the slow cooker.
  • Add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard, and smoked paprika. Stir to coat evenly.

Cooking

  • Cook on HIGH for 3 hours or LOW for 6 hours so the flavors meld and the sauce thickens.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. If the sauce is too thin, remove the lid and cook on HIGH for an additional 15–30 minutes to reduce.

Serving

  • Spoon onto buns and top each with a slice of cheese. Cover briefly so cheese melts, or toast buns under a broiler for 1–2 minutes.

Notes

For best results, do not skip browning the beef. It enhances the flavor. Can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
