Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 sticks
  • 16 oz powdered sugar 1 pound, about 3.5-4 cups
  • 1-2 tbsp milk or heavy whipping cream up to 1/4 cup, optional
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt optional

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by creaming the softened butter using a hand-held mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed for about 4-5 minutes until the butter turns pale yellow. Remember to scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
  • Once the butter is fluffy, turn off the mixer and add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. On low speed, mix until the ingredients are combined and begin to look crumbly, about 1 minute.
  • Increase the speed to medium and continue mixing for about 3-4 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • Check the consistency. If the frosting is too thick, you can add a few tablespoons of milk or cream, 1/2 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency.

Serving

  • Slather the fluffy Vanilla American Buttercream Frosting on freshly baked cakes and cupcakes, or use it to sandwich cookies. Pipe it onto brownies for a delightful layer of flavor and texture.
